U12 Girls National Trophy game V Newcastle West
Our super U12 girls played out an entertaining game today, V Newcastle West, in Newcastle West.
Conditions were perfect, and this contributed to the contest.
We were under huge pressure for the first 15 minutes and it looked like we'd concede a goal any minute, but huge credit to our back line of Amy Keogh, Abbie Hogan and Eva Bailey for keeping the opposition out. Caoimhe Manley and Maeve Quinn were again brilliant today, and both were up and down the pitch. Elsa Fitzgerald was on our wing and putting them under plenty of pressure. On our other side was Aisling Ryan, who was also playing very well. Leanne Bergin did her job very well today, too. Upfront today was the very skilful Callie Mitchell. In the 17th minute, while under big pressure at the back, we managed to counter attack. A ball out from Katie Hartnett in goals to Caoimhe in midfield who slipped a through ball for Calllie to finish superbly to the net. Against the run of play, we were 1 up!
We started to get more of the ball from that point and passed the ball around very well. The backs led by Eva had still loads to do in keeping the opposition out, and Katie had many good saves to make. Katies distribution of the ball can't be overlooked here because not once did she give away, always finding a Ballymackey shirt.
Second half and after just 3 minutes we're 2 up! A brilliant finish again from Callie. Newcastle West got an equaliser soon after, and it was game on again! Maeve Quinn and Amy were playing super at this stage, and Kate England was solid as a rock at the back.
It could have gone either way from here, but Caoimhe Manley stood up and drilled a brilliant shot that just got inside the post, 3-1 to us!
We closed the game out in style as Callie dribbled past 3 players to put away the goal of the game.
It finished 4-1 to us, but it was a tough game and credit to Newcastle West for their part in it.
Our player of the match has to be hat-trick hero Callie Mitchell. Newcastle West put on a much appreciated spread for us afterwards, thanks!
Thanks also to our ref today.
Up Ballymackey!
