Ballymackey travelled to Offaly to take on Killeigh Ladies A in the second round of the Combined Counties Season opening Competition and came away with a 3-1 win. A strong start by Ballymackey saw them apply pressure to the home side goal and force a raft of corners. Hazel Cawley scored the opener, turning home a Kate Cavanagh delivery from one of these corners. Ballymackey continued to create chances but Killeigh were always dangerous and they worked an equaliser to tie the game at the half time break. Nicola Zarina on at half time for her second match for the seniors restored the Ballymackey lead, a clever run put her on to Aoibhín Delaney's through ball, the Killeigh keeper did well to block Nicola's initial effort but she reacted quickly to finish at the second opportunity and score her first senior goal. Ballymackey were very good in possession throughout the second half, Hazel Cawley went close on a couple of occasions, with Aoibhín Delaney shooting just over. Ballymackey's dominance was rewarded with Nicola Zarina's second goal of the match, from a long throw she got between the Killeigh defence and keeper to lob the Keeper with a volleyed finish. Killeigh had a strong last 10 minutes and pressured Ballymackey but they found Mollie Ryan in defiant form in the Ballymackey goals and Ballymackey closed the game out for a 3-1 away win. We had 2 second half debuts with Laura Gleeson and Under 16 player Laura Kinsella making their bow for the team and contributing to the win. We had eye catching displays from Lisa Toohey, Kate Cavanagh, Hazel Cawley and Rachel Sheehan and our player of the match was Goalkeeper Mollie Ryan who dominated her box on the ground and in the air, as well as being super with her distribution of the ball. A good win for the Girls against a strong Killeigh side in a good quality match
